Popular Bollywood actress Alia Bhatt became the latest victim of a disturbing trend involving deepfake technology. This technology, which uses artificial intelligence (AI) to create realistic-looking fake videos, has been used to create a video featuring a woman with Alia Bhatt’s face making inappropriate gestures.
Alia Bhatt is not the only celebrity to have been targeted by deepfake technology. Other famous personalities, including Rashmika Mandanna, Kajol, Katrina Kaif, and Sara Tendulkar, have also had similar fake videos circulating online.
These incidents have raised significant concerns about the misuse of AI and the potential harm it can cause to individuals’ reputations.
The Indian government has taken a strong stance against the creation and distribution of such deepfake videos. According to recent statements, producing and sharing these videos can lead to severe penalties, including a fine of Rs 1 lakh and a jail term of up to three years.
Union Minister Rajeev Chandrasekhar announced that the government plans to appoint an officer to address these issues.
The Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (Meity) is also developing a website where people can report violations of IT rules and seek assistance in filing a First Information Report (FIR) against such content.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi has also expressed concern over the misuse of AI for creating deepfake videos, emphasizing the need for responsible use of technology.
This incident highlights the growing challenge of deep fake technology and the need for awareness and legal measures to protect individuals from such digital exploitation.
