Bangabandhu BPL 2019: Bangabandhu it means “Friend of Bengal” at it was the name given to the President of Bangladesh during 17 of April 1971 to 12 of January 1972. He was not the president for a very long time but he had a big impact on the people of Bangladesh because he worked on the independence of Bangladesh. On the other hand, BPL is the acronym for Bangladesh Premier League and it refers to the highest professional cricket league in Bangladesh, also known as BPL7. There are three different recognized ways of playing cricket by the International Cricket Council (ICC). The Bangabandhu BPL chose the Twenty20 cricket league; that is a shortened format of cricket.
Bangabandhu BPL 2019 – 20 is a tournament played by seven teams, therefore, the abbreviation of BPL7 comes from there but the original idea for 2019 was to have eight teams instead of seven. Even though they were eight teams scheduled to participate in this edition of the tournament, the idea did not succeed, and the pre-signed cricketer’s contracts were canceled.
The tournament changed the whole format and the Chittagong Vikings renamed the team to Chattogram Challengers and got back to the competition. The name of the new format was modified from BPL to BCB which means Bangladesh Cricket Board, Bangabandhu BPL 2019 is the seventh edition of the competition. The league is exponentially growing every year; it is being recognized for more countries and people over the world. The numbers for this year 2019 are very positive for the competition but also for the country hosting twenty-two countries and 439 foreign cricket stars during the tournament. Comilla Victorians team is the actual champion of the BPL. This year they are going to be defending the title.
There are a few variations this year 2019. The president of the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) announced in September 2019 that some rules and regulations of the tournament are going the be changed for this year’s edition. The format of the competition has changed because the BCB and the franchises did not find an agreement. The president of the BCB, Nazmul Hassan said that they won’t accept the demand of the franchises in any way. So, the edition will be held without taking any franchises this year.
The BCB for the moment is only sponsoring the actual champion of the tournament Comilla Victorians team.
Also, the actual president of Bangladesh reiterated that it was very important for the country to hold the tournament to honor the 100th anniversary of Bangabandhu in 2020. To pay homage to the ex-president of Bangladesh Sheikh Mujibur (Bangabandhu) the tournament this year will be named Bangabandhu BPL. The BCB will take full responsibility for taking care of the players and teams by providing them accommodations and transportations during the tournament.
On 12 November 2019, The players’ draft was scheduled to be held. But, things did not go as planned and the tournament was delayed by five days, so the draft ended up being the 17th of November 2019. The Bangladesh Cricket Board sponsored two teams while five other teams were sponsored by private companies.
On the other hand, The 16th of November 2019 the logo, as well as the players of each squad, were announced during the event of the draft by the governing council of the BCB.
The BCB wanted to keep the original names of the teams this year and in case of name changes the teams will carry the name of their cities.
