Christmas is the oldest festivity of Christianity, which annually commemorates the advent of Jesus to this world (December 25th). It is celebrated with great joy and with more popular manifestations, to the degree of which is considered a universal holiday, which even non-Christian peoples celebrate. Christmas explodes on the night of December 24th (Christmas Eve), shines on the 25th, is completed with the celebration of New Year, lasts until January 6th (feast of the Epiphany or Kings), and culminates with the Baptism of Jesus (Sunday following Epiphany).
According to the Catholic Encyclopedia, Christmas is not included in the list of Christians festivals in Irenaeus or Tertullian’s list on the same subject which are the oldest known lists. The earliest evidence of concern about the date of Merry Christmas is found in Alexandria, about 200 AD when Clement of Alexandria indicates that certain “very curious” Egyptian theologians assign not only the year but also the actual day of Christ as 25 Coptic Pashons (May 20th) in the 28th year of Augustus. Since 221, in the work Chronographiai, Sixth African July popularized December 25th as the date of the birth of Jesus. By the time of the Council of Nicea I in 325, the Alexandrian Church had already set the day for Christmas. Christmas presents various traditions and symbols such as the Christmas tree, carol songs, Christmas cards, the manger, the nativity scene or birth, Christmas dinners, bells, the familiar image of Santa Claus or Saint Nicholas, with the sleigh, reindeer, and bags with toys, among others.
Today, commerce has transformed Christmas, designed it as a time for shopping. The joy of Christmas is directly related to how close families can be, it is a time where most people take a break from their busy lives to gather together with their loved ones. It is a festivity that has transcended religions and has gotten a meaning that has to do with the joy of being together, of sharing as it can only be done during this unique time of the year. For 2019, the Christmas celebration is expected to be celebrated as follows:
